Plateau State has officially assumed control of its intrastate electricity market, marking a major shift in Nigeria’s power sector after the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) approved the transfer of regulatory oversight to the Plateau State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PLASERC).
This was disclosed In a statement via its X handle on Friday, it stated that With this transfer, the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED) has been directed to establish a subsidiary (JED SubCo) within 60 days from March 12, 2025, to manage electricity distribution and supply exclusively within Plateau State.
The sub-company must obtain the necessary intrastate electricity license from PLASERC before assuming full responsibilities. The transition process is expected to be completed by September 12, 2025.
“JED shall complete the incorporation of JED SubCo within 60 days from 12th March 2025. The sub-company shall apply for and obtain a licence for the intrastate supply and distribution of electricity from NSERC, among other directives.” The statement reads
NERC’s decision follows Plateau State’s successful compliance with the required legal and procedural steps, formally notifying the commission of its intent to oversee its electricity sector. This transition grants the state more control over power distribution, potentially improving efficiency, investment, and service delivery to residents.
Plateau now joins Lagos, Imo, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, Enugu, Niger, Edo, and Oyo in managing its own electricity market. The devolution of regulatory power is seen as a crucial step toward decentralizing Nigeria’s power sector, allowing states to address local electricity challenges more effectively.
