BeginningJune 8,2025, Nigerians will face higher costs for driver’s licenses and vehicle number plates, following a new pricing structure approved by the Joint Tax Board (JTB). The adjustments aim to enhance security features and address rising production costs.
The joint board announced a nationwide revision of fees under the new structure, motor vehicle licenses will cost ₦15,000 for three years and ₦21,000 for five years, while motorcycle and tricycle licenses are set at ₦7,000 and ₦11,000 respectively for the same durations.
Number plates will now cost ₦30,000 for standard private and commercial vehicles, and ₦400,000 for fancy vehicle plates. Motorcycle plates are priced at ₦12,000 (standard) and ₦50,000 (fancy), while articulated vehicle plates will go for ₦90,000 and dealer plates ₦100,000. Other categories include out-of-series plates at ₦150,000, government fancy vehicle plates at ₦120,000, standard government vehicle plates at ₦80,000, and government motorcycle plates at ₦50,000 (fancy) and ₦20,000 (standard).
The JTB attributes the increase to the rising costs of imported materials used in production, exacerbated by the depreciation of the naira. The last fee adjustment occurred in 2021 when the exchange rate was ₦411.63 to $1.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) emphasizes that these changes aim to improve service delivery and align with international best practices.
