NELFUND Clarifies Student Loan Distribution Process Amid Criticism

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has addressed concerns regarding the allocation of its student loan funds, stating that the distribution is not influenced by geopolitical zones.

This clarification followed the announcement that NELFUND had disbursed N2.94 billion to 19 universities, benefiting 27,667 students across the country. However, the absence of universities from the South-East and South-South regions on the list of beneficiaries raised concerns among Nigerians, particularly on social media.

Following the criticism the NELFUND, through its verified X handle (@nelfund), reiterated that
Payments are being made to those institutions that have completed the verification process.

The statement explained, “Geopolitical zones are not considered in the disbursement process. NELFUND sent a verification list to every institution eligible for disbursement. Payments are being made to those institutions that have completed the verification process.”

The agency also noted that institutions in the South-East have yet to complete the verification process, urging them to do so promptly to ensure their students can benefit from the loan scheme.

“Unfortunately, we have not yet received any response from the institutions in the South-East. We urge these institutions to complete the verification process so that their students can benefit from the scheme.”
