The Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Arch. Sonny Echono, has called on local government councils across Nigeria to channel increased resources towards the development of tertiary education.
Echono made this appeal while receiving an award of excellence at a three-day summit organized by the Association of Chairmen of Local Government Service Commissions (LGSC) in Nigeria, held in Abuja.
The summit, themed “Addressing Security and Other Contemporary Challenges at the Local Government Areas in Nigeria,” provided a platform to discuss how local governments can take on a greater role in tackling national issues, including education.
Echono, in his remarks, expressed his gratitude to the LGSC for the recognition and acknowledged the vital role local governments play in shaping the future of higher education.
He said, “As I told them, to whom much is given, much is expected. Now that Mr. President has taken a bold and courageous step to restore local government autonomy, we expect more resources to flow to that sector.
“Having done that, we expect them to invest in tertiary education, and TETFund will be there to support them.
“With these increased resources, we expect them to come on board and be equal partners with the state and federal government,”
Hon. Kamal Ayinde Bayewu, Chairman of the LGSC, also lauded Echono’s contributions to improving Nigeria’s tertiary education system, noting that his leadership has been instrumental in driving positive change.
Bayewu expressed optimism that the award would inspire even greater achievements from the TETFund Executive Secretary.
