Kano State Chief Judge, Justice Dije Abdu-Aboki, has ordered the release of 37 inmates from the Goron Dutse Medium Security Custodial Centre, marking a significant step in decongesting the state’s correctional facilities, and improving health conditions.
The decision was driven by the inmates’ deteriorating health and prolonged detention without trial .
Many of the freed inmates suffered severe health issues worsened by inadequate medical care within the facility.
The justice Abdu-Aboki stated that
“By releasing these individuals, they can seek proper medical attention outside the confines of the custodial facility”.
Their prolonged detention without trial raised concerns about rights violations, contravening standard judicial practices. Upon release, Justice Abdu-Aboki urged the inmates to maintain good behavior, cautioning against reoffending.
To facilitate reintegration, each inmate received ₦10,000 for transportation. Kano Controller of Corrections, Mr. Ado Inuwa, praised the gesture, highlighting its compassion toward inmates’ health and rights. He lauded the CJ’s commitment to improving Nigeria’s correctional system, ensuring fair justice.
He however disclosed that the move aligns with ongoing efforts to address overcrowding and promote humane treatment within correctional facilities .
