As Nigeria grapples with an alarming rise in Lassa fever cases, The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) have reported a total of 1,035 confirmed cases and 174 deaths across 28 states and 129 local government areas (LGAs).
The latest figures, disclosed by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), reflect a troubling trend in the spread of the acute viral hemorrhagic fever.
The NCDC Director-General Dr. Jide Idris, made the disclosure in Abuja.
He disclosed that the increase in case numbers is partly due to enhanced surveillance .
“We now have a better reporting mechanisms, which have allowed for the identification of more cases.”
The DG urged Nigerians to maintain a healthy environment.
“Environmental factors, including deforestation, urban expansion, and the effects of climate change, have created fertile ground for rodents to thrive, further exacerbating the problem.”
He further raised concern over the death toll cases.
“The number of suspected cases has reached 8,569 as of October 13, 2024. Although these numbers shows a slight decrease from 2023, when 1,270 confirmed cases were reported.
“Nigeria reported 1,067 confirmed cases across 27 states and 112 LGAs in the year 2022. 28 states and 114 LGAs reported confirmed cases, with 9,155 suspected cases, 1,270 confirmed cases, and 227 deaths in 2023.
Dr Idris highlighted that as of October 13, 2024, 8,569 suspected cases, 1,035 confirmed cases, and 174 deaths have been reported across 28 states and 129 LGAs.
