The Arewa Youth for Peace and Security has urged the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) to ensure strict implementation of special trade licences on relocated Apo Mechanic spare parts dealers.
This call comes as the FCT authorities prepare to relocate the dealers under the AMMC.
According to the group’s secretary general, Salihu Dantata Mahmud, the lack of regulation in the spare parts sector has led to the sale of substandard parts, resulting in accidents and loss of lives.
Mahmud emphasized that obtaining special trade licences is crucial in ensuring the quality and safety of spare parts, as is the practice worldwide.
“The AMMC’s implementation of the special trade licence policy is expected to not only enhance safety but also generate significant revenue for the FCT administration.
” With over 3 billion naira in potential annual revenue, the FCTA can explore this avenue to ensure the sale of only original and standard spare parts.”
Mahmud reiterated that the special trade licence policy has been overlooked due to lack of prioritization, resulting in significant revenue loss for the FCTA.
He stressed that only certified dealers should be allowed to operate, as it is the practice globally.
