A devastating fire incident occurred at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State on Monday, December 2, 2024.
The fire, which was caused by a sudden power surge, ravaged the stores section of the office, destroying essential electoral materials.
According to a preliminary report presented to the INEC Commission during its regular meeting on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, the Items destroyed in the inferno include 706 ballot boxes, 50 election bags, 322 apron vests, three electric power generators, 140 stamps, 50 ballot box seals and assorted items such as envelopes, posters, forms and booklets.
The National Commissioner and Chairman, Information & Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun stated that
“We appreciate the cooperation of the Nigeria Police Force and the Delta State Fire Service for their prompt response”.
Fortunately, no lives were lost, and there were no injuries reported. The incident has been reported to the security agencies and emergency services for a thorough investigation.
The affected INEC office serves 131,747 registered voters across 14 Registration Areas (Wards) and 238 Polling Units in Ika North East Local Government Area.
