The coordinator of the Arewa renaissance group Umar Abba has strongly appealed to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, to reopen some locked up scrap shops in Abuja .
Recently a video went viral where some gully outlet covers were vandalised in the city centre which prompted the minister’s action.
Umar emphasised that scrap business in Abuja which operates under the Scrap environmental waste management association is a legally setup association made up of bonafide members .
“So there is difference between scrap dealers and scavengers. Many people don’t know about the difference between the two groups.
Zainab Mohammed, the coordinator of self reliance agitation network emphasised that at a time youths have chosen to be self reliant by engaging in trade of scraps, they require encouragement from the government than condemnation .
“Even though the FCT Minister acted as a result of the continued vandalism of critical infrastructure.
We therefore call on FCT Minister to please reopen the locked up scrap shops as not all of them are criminal minded.
“We must not allow the crime of one person to affect the others. If possible,the FCT Minister can invite the bonafide scrap traders for a cautionary meeting from where a standard operational guideline could be reeled out.
“We all condemn the vandalisation of critical infrastructures. Fct is for all,as such government properties must be protected like ours, because we are the society.”
