The Chairman of the FCT Forum of Patriotic Scavengers, Muntari Mohammed, has written an urgent appeal letter to the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas seeking intervention to stop the mass burning of scavenging store points in Abuja.
The scavengers group said that the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, ordered the demolition and burning of their sites in various parts of the FCT, including Karmo, Gwagwa, Idu, Kabusa, Deidei, Apo, and others, following the theft of critical infrastructure by unknown criminal elements.
While acknowledging that some individuals may have erred, the scavengers argue that this should not warrant the ill-treatment and general misconception of their entire community.
The group emphasized their commitment to be law-abiding citizen and practice honesty.
“We have resolved to register and issue identity cards to our members, as well as educate and enlighten them against tampering with government infrastructure.”
The Speaker’s intervention is sought to call the FCT Minister to order and halt the destruction of their livelihoods.
“We believe that the Speaker can make a positive impact and help build a better Nigeria.”
