The Gender Mobile Initiative has been honored with the Excellence in Women’s Development Award by the Office of the Speaker, House of Representatives.
Communication Officer, Gender Mobile Initiative, Abubakar Abdullahi made the disclosure in a statement.
The award is part of the celebration to mark the International Women’s Day Celebration.
The event was hosted by the office of the Speaker in partnership with Gender Mobile Initiative.
The organizers also recognized and rewarded young women with cash prizes for their leadership and advocacy in advancing gender-responsive policies.
The event underscored the urgent need for gender-responsive legislative reforms and reinforced commitments to advancing gender equality in Nigeria.
The event brought together policymakers, legal experts, and young female leaders to push for gender-responsive legislative reforms in Nigeria.
From a competitive pool of over 800 applications, the event saw 50 emerging women leaders analyze and propose amendments to key policies affecting women’s rights.
Participants presented their policy recommendations to Members of Parliament and key stakeholders, advocating for accountability, inclusivity, and effective implementation of gender-related laws.
The top three groups received cash prizes.
Speaker Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas, reinforced the National Assembly’s commitment to gender equality by pledging ₦2 million to the top three groups presenting policy recommendations.
The House Committee on Youth, Hon. Olamiju Alao Akala, also gave assurance that the House of Representatives would engage with the recommendations for necessary legislative action.
The statement noted that the organization and the office of the speaker will compile and advance the recommendations for deliberation.
“ The House of Representatives will facilitate follow-ups to track progress, while ongoing collaboration with civil society and advocacy groups will ensure women’s voices remain central to policymaking”.
