Nigeria’s Super Eagles took a significant step toward securing a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 2-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali on Friday night. A first-half double from Victor Osimhen proved decisive as the visitors outclassed their hosts.
From the opening whistle, Nigeria asserted their dominance, controlling possession and creating early chances. Their persistence paid off in the 11th minute when Ademola Lookman’s well-delivered free kick found Osimhen, who rifled the ball into the net, leaving the Rwandan goalkeeper with no chance.
As Rwanda attempted to respond, Nigeria’s defense stood firm, frustrating the home side’s attacking efforts. Just before halftime, a defensive lapse by Rwanda gifted Osimhen another opportunity, and the Napoli striker made no mistake, calmly slotting home his second goal of the night.
The second half saw Rwanda push forward in search of a comeback, but Nigeria’s disciplined defense and goalkeeper Francis Uzoho ensured a clean sheet. With the win, Nigeria strengthens its position in Group C of the African qualifiers.
Next, the Super Eagles will face Zimbabwe on Monday, March 24, at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, where they will look to maintain their momentum.
