President Bola Tinubu has dismissed claims that Nigeria is veering towards a one-party system following a series of high-profile defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement, the presidency attributed the opposition’s challenges to internal disorganization rather than external coercion.
Recent defections from opposition parties to the APC have sparked debates about the state of Nigeria’s democracy. Notably, figures such as Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori have shifted allegiance to the ruling party. These moves have led to concerns about the potential erosion of a multiparty system.
Addressing these concerns, President Tinubu, through his spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, stated
“The opposition cannot blame President Tinubu and the governing APC for their poor organisation, indiscipline, and gross incompetence in managing their affairs. It is certainly not part of President Tinubu’s job to organise or strengthen opposition parties.”
The presidency emphasized that political realignments are a natural aspect of democratic societies and that the APC’s growing appeal is due to its policies and governance approach.
“Nigerians migrating to the APC and expressing support for Tinubu are doing so out of their free will, based on the belief that the reforms being executed are in the interest of Nigerians and the unborn generation.”
Critics, however, argue that the pattern of defections raises questions about the health of Nigeria’s democracy. A group of 17 civil society activists recently issued a statement warning against what they perceive as a deliberate campaign to undermine democratic foundations. They accused the administration of employing tactics that pressure opposition figures into switching allegiance.
In response, the presidency refuted these allegations, asserting that such claims lack evidence and are rooted in the opposition’s failure to maintain internal cohesion. The administration reiterated its commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring a vibrant political landscape.
