Today, we mark June 12 not just as a date on the calendar, but as a living memorial of sacrifice, resilience, and the continuing journey of our democracy.
It is a day to remember Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola (M.K.O. Abiola) the man who won the freest and fairest election in Nigeria’s history, yet was denied the mandate. He did not just win a vote; he won the heart of a people longing for genuine change. For daring to stand for truth and democratic values, he paid the supreme price.
Though he never occupied the office he rightfully won, his death fast-tracked Nigeria’s return to democracy. One thing led to another, and today, we walk on the democratic path he helped pave with courage and conviction.
Tribute to the Unsung Heroes of June 12
I also salute the cream of men and women in the electoral commission of that era headed by the reputable Professor Humphrey Nwosu, who piloted the 1993 election with historic credibility, courage, and excellence.
Every time I see his picture, I am reminded that somewhere in this country, another like him still exists a man or woman of integrity, waiting for the chance to restore faith in our institutions. May their light be noticed and embraced in our time.
A Time to Reflect.
June 12 is not just a celebration it is a mirror. A time to reflect deeply:
Are we living out the values of true democracy?
Is justice prevailing?
Are we, as citizens and leaders, building or breaking the system?
Democracy is more than just casting a ballot it is governance with conscience, representation with responsibility, and service with sincerity.

We pray for unity, peace, and national healing. May the God of our land lift Nigeria above division, corruption, and fear and into a new era of equity and prosperity.
A Call to Action.
Let us remember: Democracy is not a gift from government, it is the right and duty of every Nigerian.
Let’s honor June 12 with our actions, by choosing integrity, building justice, and holding on to hope.
To M.K.O Abiola, to Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, and to all who sacrificed your legacy will not be forgotten.
