In a decisive move to bolster the morale of Nigeria’s Super Falcons, President Bola Tinubu has endorsed the immediate disbursement of all outstanding allowances and match bonuses ahead of their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final against Morocco.
The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, announced on Thursday that all entitlements up to and including the final have been disbursed for immediate payment to players, coaches, and officials.
Describing the move as “policy in motion,” Dikko emphasized the administration’s commitment to timely payments and athlete welfare.
He stated, “This is the kind of sports administration we are building, one rooted in dignity, trust, and shared prosperity.”
The initiative also extends to Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, who are set to begin their 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket campaign in Côte d’Ivoire.
They will receive enhanced allowances and bonuses in line with the new policy direction.
This proactive approach marks a significant shift from previous practices where athlete payments were often delayed. The administration aims to establish timely payments as the standard practice moving forward.
The Super Falcons are aiming for their 10th African title in the upcoming final, while D’Tigress seek their fifth championship. The financial support is expected to eliminate distractions and enable the teams to focus on their performance.
Dikko disclosed that President Tinubu’s approval of these payments underscores a renewed commitment to supporting Nigerian athletes and enhancing the country’s sport administration .
