President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lauded the Super Falcons for their dramatic comeback win in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), describing the team as a symbol of resilience and national pride.
The President in a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga made the disclosure.
Following the thrilling 3-2 victory over Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses, Tinubu held a celebratory video call with team captain Rasheedat Ajibade and her jubilant teammates.

The Falcons’ triumph marks Nigeria’s record-extending 10th WAFCON title. During the call, Tinubu singled out standout performers, praising Ajibade for clinching both the Most Valuable Player and Woman of the Tournament awards.
He also commended forward Esther Okoronkwo for her composure under pressure, especially her crucial 64th-minute penalty that sparked the team’s comeback.
“Your penalty was bold and beautiful,” he told Okoronkwo, who also assisted the winning goal scored by Jennifer Echegini.
Tinubu applauded not only the players but also the coaching staff, team officials, and the sports ministry for their roles in the historic win.
“Safe journey home. Avoid injuries. God bless you,” he added, as the players responded with cheers of “Thank you, Mr President!”
Ajibade, speaking on behalf of the team, expressed gratitude to the President for the full payment of their allowances and promised to personally present the trophy to him in Abuja.
The virtual meeting ended on a patriotic note with a rendition of the national anthem and three resounding “Gbosa!” cheers for the Commander-in-Chief.
