The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released corrected results for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), revealing that 62.96% of candidates achieved credits in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
This marks a significant increase from the initially reported 38.32%, following the discovery and correction of a grading error.
In a press briefing on Friday, at the council’s national office in Yaba, Lagos, the Head of WAEC Nigeria, Dr. Amos Dangut,revealed that “A serialized code file was wrongly used in the printing of the English Language Objective paper,” he stated, leading to incorrect answer keys being applied during grading.
Following the correction, 1,239,884 candidates, representing 62.96%, obtained credits in at least five subjects, including English and Mathematics. This marks a significant increase from the initially reported 38.32%.
Dr. Dangut expressed regret over the error, stating, “We acknowledge the emotional ordeal that candidates, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders must have had to deal with.” He assured that measures are being taken to prevent such occurrences in the future.
Candidates are advised to recheck their results on the WAEC portal, www.waecdirect.org. Digital certificates will be available for application 48 hours after result confirmation. However, candidates sponsored by indebted state governments will not have access to their results until outstanding payments are cleared.
