The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS) has unveiled plans to establish an authentic national farmer and farmland registry, as part of efforts to achieve food sovereignty and ensure agricultural interventions reach genuine farmers.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, disclosed this in Abuja during a courtesy visit by the Amana Farmers and Grains Supplies Association of Nigeria (AFGSAN), led by its Chairman, Alhaji Haruna Ahmed Fanbeguwa.
According to the Minister, the initiative anchored on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) will begin with a pilot phase in Nasarawa State.
“You will see a farmland that is cultivated and also the farmer cultivating that farmland,” Kyari explained. “This will ensure that government interventions in the Agriculture sector will get to the intended farmers.”
He stressed that collaboration with credible farmer associations like AFGSAN would be critical to ensuring transparency and accountability in the sector.
Kyari added that the partnership aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes food security, economic diversification, and job creation.
AFGSAN Chairman, Alhaji Haruna Ahmed Fanbeguwa, assured the Ministry of the association’s commitment to supporting its initiatives. He emphasized that farmer-led collaborations would be instrumental in achieving sustainable agriculture and food sovereignty.
The Minister also reiterated that the federal government would continue to provide enabling policies, access to capital, and an investor-friendly environment for the private sector, which he described as the “major drivers of the economy.”
