President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate suspension of the current cashless payment system at federal airports across the country.

The decision was part of resolutions reached at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, said the President ordered the suspension following widespread complaints that the system had caused severe gridlock at airports, leading to passengers missing their flights.

According to Keyamo, Tinubu expressed concern over the difficulties Nigerians were facing under the cashless regime.

“Out of empathy, the President directed that we suspend the present system because it created a lot of gridlock and Nigerians were suffering,” the minister said.

He added that the President instructed the ministry to revert to the previous payment arrangement while working to address the challenges associated with the suspended system.

The cashless policy will remain on hold until necessary improvements are made to ensure seamless implementation, the minister noted.
