A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party has formally ratified former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
This development followed the distruption of the Special National Convention in Abuja.
The National Publicity Secretary of the party’s Interim National Working Committee, Comrade Ini Ememobong made the disclosure in a statement.
According to the party, it had duly notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies of its activities and had secured the A Class Event Centre in Abuja .
The motion to adopt Jonathan was moved by Anthony Aziegbemi, Chairman of PDP in Edo State, and seconded by former Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Sanusi Daggash.
The Turaki-led faction presented Jonathan with a certificate of return, confirming him as the faction’s candidate ahead of 2027.
Jonathan’s emergence followed a screening waiver granted by the faction on May 19.
Babangida Aliyu, who chaired the screening panel, said Jonathan’s record as deputy governor, governor, vice president and president left no room for further checks.
A Federal High Court ruling on Tuesday also cleared the former president to contest in 2027, dismissing a suit that sought to block his candidacy.
The Turaki faction welcomed the judgment, describing it as consistent with the law.
