Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has explained his decision to partner with former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, on the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket ahead of the 2027 presidential election, saying the alliance is driven by a commitment to Nigeria rather than regional, religious or personal interests.
Kwankwaso made the disclosure as the 2027 presidential campaign officially begins, saying the partnership was formed against the backdrop of the country’s economic challenges, insecurity, unemployment and the need for stronger public institutions.
“Our partnership is not about region, religion or personal ambition. It is about Nigeria,” Kwankwaso said in a statement to Nigerians on the commencement of the 2027 presidential campaign.
According to him, the country is at a “critical crossroads,” with rising food and living costs putting increasing pressure on families, while millions of young Nigerians continue to search for meaningful employment and opportunities.
He also expressed concern over the operating environment for businesses, citing high costs and economic uncertainty as challenges affecting the country’s growth.
On security, Kwankwaso said terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of violence had continued to threaten communities and deprive Nigerians of lives, homes and livelihoods.
“Our farmers need security to return to their farms, our children need safe schools, and every Nigerian deserves to live without fear,” he said.
Kwankwaso said the Obi-Kwankwaso partnership was aimed at building a country where government serves the people, hard work is rewarded and young Nigerians can build successful futures within the country.
He also called for urgent investment in education and healthcare, improved infrastructure and stronger institutions, alongside greater transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.
Despite the challenges, the former governor said Nigeria had the people, resources and potential to become a prosperous and secure nation.
“What we need is leadership with the competence, courage and commitment to put the interests of Nigerians first,” he said.
Kwankwaso called on young people, women, workers, farmers, entrepreneurs and professionals to join the political movement, urging Nigerians to move beyond divisive politics and focus on issues affecting their daily lives.
He further urged Nigerians to demand “accountability, competence and results” from those entrusted with public office, describing the 2027 election as an opportunity for citizens to choose a new direction for the country.
He subsequently called on Nigerians to support the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket and candidates of the NDC, while urging political actors and supporters to conduct their campaigns peacefully and responsibly.
“Together, we can build a stronger nation and Nigeria will be OK,” Kwankwaso said.
