President Bola Tinubu has fulfilled his pledge to reward each member of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, with the naira equivalent of $100,000 for winning the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.
The payment follows the team’s victory over Mali on August 4, 2025, which secured their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title. Officials of the team were also promised the naira equivalent of $50,000 each.
The cash component of the reward has now been fully paid, alongside other incentives announced for the team, including national honours and three bedroom houses in Abuja.
Tinubu explained that the delay in paying the cash reward was caused by the statutory processes required before the funds could be released.
“That took time, but a promise made must be a promise kept,” the President said.
He said the Federal Government was also working to conclude payment of the outstanding cash rewards promised to members of the Super Falcons.
According to Tinubu, Nigerian athletes who distinguish themselves on the international stage deserve tangible recognition from the government rather than applause alone.
“My promise to every Nigerian Athlete is make NIGERIA proud, and come back to a grateful Nation,” he said.
