Akpabio orders employers to pay domestic workers Minimum Wage

While passing the new minimum wage bill into law on the floor of the senate, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said domestic workers are also entitled to the minimum wage from their employer.

According to Akpabio, drivers, gateman and apprentice are not to be paid below N70,000 by their employers as they must adhere to the minimum wage when hiring additional help adding that the small-scale employers and those in informal sectors like domestic work and tailoring are must also adhere to the minimum wage.

The Senate president said: “If you’re a tailor and you employ additional hands, you can’t pay the person below N70,000. If you have a housemaid, you cannot pay them below N70,000. If you hire a driver or a gateman, you cannot pay them below N70,000.”
