The Presidency has clarified that Betta Edu, former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, will not be returning to her previous role in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet, confirming her permanent exit.
Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga put an end to speculation about Edu’s possible reinstatement during a Sunday appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
Following her suspension, President Tinubu ordered an extensive investigation into the ministry, pledging to address any misconduct uncovered.
Onanuga emphasized on the program that Edu’s case is officially closed, with her position now permanently filled by Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, a former governorship candidate from Plateau State, recently appointed to the cabinet.
He said, “I think there is another person from Cross River in the cabinet. Betta Edu is gone. Don’t forget that she was suspended in January, and this is October.
“No, she is gone. Her position has been taken over by someone else — that’s the man from Plateau (Nentawe) who is now assuming the role. For this government, there is no place for her in the cabinet.”
Additionally, Onanuga hinted that, while the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has not publicly released details of their findings, the president’s decisive actions suggest that any materials they provided may have played a role in this decision.
“The EFCC has not shared whatever they have, but if you consider the president’s action, it suggests that the EFCC may have submitted something that justified the president’s decision.” He added.
