The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has indicated a possible policy implementation that will permit the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidates to utilize their personal phone devices to take the examination.
The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of JAMB, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, revealed this while speaking at the 2023 Policy Meeting on Admissions to Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria in Abuja.
He said the policy implementation is borne out of the high cost of logistics in taking the UTME nationwide.
The registrar explained that over N1.2billion naira is spent to equip a CBT centre in Kaduna state, particularly in procuring computers which candidates use to take the examination.
“The policy which falls under the “Bring Your Own Device” may require candidates wishing to take UTME in the future to bring their own devices to the examination hall.”
Ishaq further expressed worry over the quest for university education among candidates at the detriment of polytechnics and colleges of education.
While condemning the wide disparity in admission quotas in the country, he urged aspiring undergraduates to explore other options within the tertiary education sector.
Furthermore JAMB set the minimum scores for candidates to secure admission into universities in Nigeria at 140, while fixing that of polytechnics and Colleges of education at the minimum cut off of 100 mark.
