A recent surge in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in China has sparked concerns globally. The virus has led to overcrowded hospitals, emergency measures, and public concerns in China, with cases spiking across northern Chinese provinces this winter, particularly among children.
Neighboring countries such as Cambodia, Taiwan, and Hong Kong are closely monitoring the HMPV situation, having reported a few cases but no widespread outbreaks. Chinese authorities have announced measures to curb the spread of the virus, including constant monitoring of cases, adoption of masks, social distancing, and disinfection of public spaces.
While HMPV typically causes milder symptoms than COVID-19, it is still a significant concern, especially among children under 14 years old. “Respiratory infections tend to peak during the winter season,” says China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning. “The diseases appear to be less severe and spread with a smaller scale compared to the previous year” .
In response to the outbreak, Dr. John Oladejo, Director of Special Duties at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention disclosed that health authorities in Nigeria are implementing emergency measures to monitor and manage the spread of HMPV. “The FG will activate surveillance measures, like quarantine, for passengers coming in from China”.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has also weighed in on the outbreak, stating that while the situation is being closely monitored, there is no evidence to suggest that HMPV is a new or novel virus .
Instead, the WHO attributes the surge in cases to the seasonal nature of the virus, combined with the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions in China.
