Canadian PM Under Pressure Amid Liberal Party Dissent

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s tenure faces its most significant test yet, with reports suggesting he may step down as early as this week amid growing unrest within his Liberal Party.

The Globe and Mail, citing anonymous party insiders, reported that Trudeau’s decision could be announced ahead of the Liberal Party caucus meeting on Wednesday.

The prime minister has faced increasing pressure from both within and outside his government in recent months. Domestically, his approval ratings have plummeted, and his government narrowly survived a series of no-confidence votes.

Internationally, Trudeau has struggled to navigate the escalating tensions with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who has proposed a 25% tariff on Canadian goods and openly mocked Trudeau on social media.

Adding to the turmoil, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned in December, citing disagreements over Trudeau’s response to Trump’s trade threats. This high-profile resignation marked the first public sign of cabinet dissent and preceded a major cabinet shuffle aimed at stabilizing Trudeau’s government.

Despite these challenges, Trudeau had pledged to lead the Liberals into the next federal election, scheduled for October 2025. However, mounting criticism and a 20-point deficit in polls against Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre have raised questions about his ability to guide the party forward.

Trudeau’s political journey has been marked by highs and lows since he swept to power in 2015. His achievements include introducing a carbon tax, legalizing cannabis, and negotiating a new trade deal with the U.S. and Mexico. However, his leadership has also been marred by controversies and a growing perception that his government is out of touch with Canadians.

While Trudeau’s resignation has yet to be confirmed, speculation about his departure highlights the challenges facing the Liberal Party as it seeks to regroup and redefine its vision for Canada. Whether Trudeau remains in an interim role or steps aside immediately, his decision will undoubtedly reshape the political landscape in the country.
