Experts in the health sector has called for a multi-disciplinary approach to combat the rising cancer burden in Africa.
They disclosed this at the 5th annual Colorectal Cancer in Africa Awareness Workshop in Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, Professor Musa Ali-Gombe, a renowned radiation oncologist, emphasized the importance of partnership and capacity building in cancer care.
He noted that there is a need for more professionals trained in cancer care management.
“You know, the cancer burden is rising in the country; there is a need to have more professionals that are trained in the aspect of cancer management.”
He further added that the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) is partnering with the Concern Medics Foundation (CMF) to enhance the skills of oncology professionals in Nigeria.”
“The awareness workshop is brought together by medical professionals to discuss the prevention and management of colorectal cancer.
“The capacity-building programs are said to cover various aspects of cancer care, including Screening, Diagnosis, Treatment
Control, and Palliative care.”
The Chairperson of Concern Medics Foundation (CMF), Dr Sadiya Gumi, highlighted the importance of collaboration and a patient-centred approach.
“There is no single organization that can do it alone. We want to expand awareness and support in ways that complement, not compete with, the great work already happening.”
She emphasized the need for commitment to collaborate, learn from others, and prioritize patients’ needs.
“We don’t have all the answers, but what we do have is a commitment to collaborate to learn from others and to keep putting patients first.”
Deputy CMAC Research and Training, Dr Batta Cephas emphasized the need to cascade information to other hospitals.
He also highlighted the importance of multidisciplinary team approach to treatment.
“This meeting is to create, and to bring awareness about what we do daily.
We featured live surgeries, demonstrating skill transfer and the importance of sustenance. We want other hospitals to imbibe good patient management skills”.
“We have different sub-specialties like radiologist, oncologist, surgeons and then the nurses are part of the management plan of the patient right from the beginning.”
