The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has strongly criticized the recent motion at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Summit to adopt President Bola Tinubu as the party’s sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement issued on Thursday, CUPP described the motion moved by Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma, and seconded by Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani as alarming and undemocratic.
The group expressed concern over the implications of the decision, which it said reflects growing unease within the ruling APC amid escalating economic hardship across the country.
“This unprecedented move, just two years into President Tinubu’s term, signals deep unease within the APC camp amid widespread public dissatisfaction with the harsh economic realities facing the nation,” the CUPP said.
The coalition argued that endorsing Tinubu as a sole candidate fails to represent the will of Nigerians, whose votes will ultimately determine the country’s leadership.
“Nigerians across the country view this move as a troubling indication of the APC’s disconnect from the masses and an attempt to undermine the democratic process,” the statement added.
CUPP also referenced the controversial 2023 elections, calling them a precursor to the people’s growing determination to protect democratic values.
“We stand united in our commitment to resist any attempts to manipulate, steal, or rig the 2027 elections,” the group said.
The coalition urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and proactive in defending the nation’s democracy, stressing that the 2027 elections will be a pivotal moment for the country.
“The Nigerian electorate will not be silenced, and we will ensure that our voices are heard through the power of our votes,” CUPP concluded.
