Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has addressed recent flooding incidents, attributing them to natural causes.
In a statement, Wahab apologized to residents for the inconvenience caused by the floods, stating, “We are sorry for the inconvenience caused due to nature’s course.” He emphasized that the flooding was not due to a lack of planning but was a result of natural events. Emergency teams were deployed early to mitigate the impact.
Wahab highlighted the state’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws, including the removal of structures obstructing drainage systems. “Many more structures obstructing the free flow of rainwater in Lagos will still be removed irrespective of who or how highly placed the owners are,” he asserted.
He urged residents to cooperate with the government by avoiding activities that hinder water flow and to maintain a clean environment. “We want to thank Lagosians and appeal to everyone to join hands in making our environment better for future generations,” Wahab added.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to mitigating such events through strict enforcement of environmental laws.
