A PhD candidate from the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), was abducted on campus early Friday morning, while doing her normal early morning workout
Dorcas, a doctoral student, left her postgraduate dormitory at Peter Odili Hall at approximately 6 a.m. to go for her routine jog within the university grounds. “However, outside the regular schedule, she failed to return. An hour later, her family received a chilling ransom call demanding ₦10 million.”
Campus community members and social media followers have expressed shock and outrage, demanding swift action.
A post on X by CEO of Educare Alex Onyiya drew attention to the alarming development.
The post is as follows; “Yesterday, Dorcas who is a PhD student of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Nigeria Nsukka was kidnapped inside the school premises.”
“She left the PG hostel, Peter Odili Hall around 6am to jog, which she does regularly inside the school taking the same axis.
An hour later they called demanding a ransom of 10M.
We can’t let this lady’s life be terminated.”
Security experts are urging UNN and local authorities to reassess and reinforce safety protocols including increasing patrols, improving lighting, and enhancing surveillance across the 871 hectare campus.
It was disclosed that students and staff have begun organizing peaceful protests and setting up a relief fund to support the family while the authorities undertake rescue operations. Parents and stakeholders are also calling for background checks on security staff and a transparent update on search efforts.
