President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone was officially elected on Sunday as the new chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
The decision was taken during the 67th Ordinary Session of the Authority in Abuja’s State House Banquet Hall.
The announcement, made by President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga on his X account confirmed that Bio will assume the two-year leadership term, succeeding Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu.
In his words “Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio is the new chairman of ECOWAS. He succeeds President Bola Tinubu, who chaired the regional economic bloc for the past two years”.
Tinubu had chaired the regional economic bloc since July 9, 2023, when he was first elected in Guinea-Bissau, and was re-elected to the position on July 7, 2024, during the ECOWAS summit held in Abuja.
