The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of the late former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.
The announcement was made by the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
A statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on July 15, 2025, confirmed the declaration. The holiday aligns with the ongoing seven-day national mourning period declared by President Tinubu, which began on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
According to the Minister, the public holiday serves as a mark of respect for the late President’s lifelong service to Nigeria, his role in the country’s democratic journey, and his enduring contributions to national development.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo said.
He urged Nigerians to use the day to honour the memory of the former President by promoting peace, unity, and patriotism — values he consistently championed throughout his public service.
As previously announced, national flags are to be flown at half-mast throughout the mourning period.
“The Federal Government extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late President, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul,” the statement added.
