- Reaffirms Commitment to Inclusive World Order

Nigeria has thrown its weight behind China’s newly launched Global Governance Initiative (GGI), describing it as a timely and thoughtful contribution to strengthening the international system.
The endorsement was contained in a statement signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Thursday, September 11, 2025.
Launched at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Plus meeting in Tianjin, China, on September 1, ahead of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, the initiative builds on China’s previous frameworks—the Global Development Initiative (GDI), Global Security Initiative (GSI), and Global Civilization Initiative (GCI).
It seeks to address pressing challenges in global governance, ranging from climate change and digital inequality to the regulation of emerging technologies.
The statement reads “Nigeria particularly welcomes the initiative’s emphasis on sovereign equality, rule of law, multilateralism, people-centered governance, and results-oriented action,”
“As one of Africa’s largest economies and an active participant in multilateral diplomacy, we see the GGI as a valuable platform to advance shared priorities such as UN reform, equitable development, and inclusive governance in emerging domains like artificial intelligence, cyberspace, and outer space.”
The statement further highlighted the synergy between the GGI and Nigeria’s national development objectives, as well as the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
Nigeria, it said, remains committed to working with partners across the Global South to foster consensus, strengthen regional cooperation, and contribute to a sustainable and equitable global order.
“Through our support for the GGI, Nigeria reaffirms its enduring commitment to a more just, inclusive, and effective international order one that reflects the aspirations of all peoples and upholds the principles of shared responsibility and mutual respect,” the statement added.
