Conservative activist and Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk was fatally shot during a public event at Utah Valley University (UVU) on Wednesday while the 31-year-old was addressing a crowd of approximately 3,000 attendees as part of his “American Comeback Tour” when a single gunshot struck him in the neck, leading to his untimely death.
The shooting occurred around 12:10 p.m. local time while Kirk was participating in a Q&A session under a tent on the UVU campus. Eyewitnesses reported that the shot appeared to come from a nearby rooftop. Despite immediate medical attention, Kirk succumbed to his injuries.
The incident has prompted widespread condemnation from leaders across the political spectrum.
Former President Barack Obama condemned the act, stating,
“We don’t yet know what motivated the person who shot and killed Charlie Kirk, but this kind of despicable violence has no place in our democracy. Michelle and I will be praying for Charlie’s family tonight, especially his wife Erika and their two young children.”
President Donald Trump also expressed his grief, describing Kirk as “a great guy from top to bottom” and called for prayers for his family.
Vice President Kamala Harris stated, “Let me be clear: Political violence has no place in America. I condemn this act, and we all must work together to ensure this does not lead to more violence.”
Utah Governor Spencer Cox labeled the shooting a “political assassination” and emphasized the need for unity in the face of such tragedies.
As the nation mourns the loss of a prominent political figure, authorities continue their investigation into the motive and identity of the shooter. Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, are actively involved in the case.
Charlie Kirk leaves behind his wife, Erika, and their two young children. He was known for his influential role in conservative politics and his efforts to engage young Americans in political discourse.
