President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate deployment of an army battalion to Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State following a deadly attack by suspected Boko Haram terrorists in Worro community.
Tinubu strongly condemned the attack, describing it as cowardly and barbaric, and accused the assailants of deliberately targeting defenceless civilians in their campaign of terror.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser, the President said the newly deployed military unit will spearhead Operation Savannah Shield, aimed at checking the activities of the terrorists and protecting vulnerable communities in the area.
The President expressed anger that the attackers killed residents who had rejected their attempt at indoctrination, choosing instead to practise a form of Islam that promotes peace and rejects extremism and violence.
“It is commendable that the community members, even though Muslims, refused to be conscripted into a weird belief that promotes violence over peace and dialogue,” Tinubu said.
He directed federal and state agencies to work closely to provide relief and support to affected residents and ensure that the perpetrators of the attack are brought to justice.
President Tinubu also prayed for the repose of the souls of those killed and condoled with the bereaved families, as well as the people and government of Kwara State.
