A Federal High Court in Kaduna has scheduled April 14, 2026, to deliver its ruling on the bail application filed by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who is facing charges of alleged financial misconduct and abuse of office.
At Wednesday’s proceedings, both the defence and prosecution presented their final arguments on the application. Counsel to the former governor, Iyamu Oyewole, argued that bail is a constitutional right, stressing that his client has strong ties within Nigeria and poses no flight risk.
However, the prosecution opposed the request, urging the court to deny bail on the grounds that El-Rufai could potentially influence witnesses or interfere with ongoing investigations if released.
After hearing both sides, the presiding judge, Rilwan Aikawa, adjourned the matter, stating that a ruling would be delivered on April 14.
El-Rufai will remain in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) pending the court’s decision.
The former governor, who also served as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, is currently standing trial over allegations brought against him by the ICPC.
He arrived at the court premises around 9 a.m. on Wednesday under tight security, dressed in a light brown outfit and cap. Security presence was significantly increased ahead of the hearing, amid expectations of a large turnout of supporters and political observers.
El-Rufai had filed the bail application through his legal team on Tuesday, seeking release pending the determination of the case.
