Nigerian sprinter Tobi Amusan has urged young athletes not to allow fear or doubt stop them from pursuing their dreams, following her gold medal win at the African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana.
Amusan, the world record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, delivered the message after clinching Nigeria’s first gold medal at the championships on Wednesday.
Speaking with journalists after the race, the Nigerian sprint star reflected on the doubts she faced at the beginning of her career and encouraged upcoming athletes to remain confident despite criticism.
She said: “Don’t let anyone talk fear into your dreams. I remember when I started hurdling, I heard a lot of ‘Oh, nobody is going to do well as a hurdler from Africa.’ And guess who is the World Record holder? Me.”
