Renowned health expert and oncology professional, Dr. Mutiat Oji, has penned an open letter to popular Nollywood veteran Ogogo following news of his cancer diagnosis, using the moment to educate the public on what a stage 4 diagnosis truly entails.
In the heartfelt letter shared online, Dr. Oji said the news of Ogogo’s diagnosis “really touched” her as a Nigerian and as someone who works in oncology.
She noted that like millions of Nigerians, she has grown to love the characters Ogogo has brought to life on screen over the years.
“But beyond emotions, I was compelled to speak up to correct misconceptions and give hope to families facing similar battles.
Dr. Oji explained that stage 4 cancer generally means the cancer has spread from its original site to another part of the body.
“Stage 4 does NOT mean someone is going to die tomorrow. Unfortunately, metastatic/stage 4 cancer is generally not considered curable. But that does NOT mean it cannot be treated.”
According to her, treatment options depend on the type and biology of the cancer and may include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, hormone therapy, radiation, or a combination.
The goal, she added, is often to control the cancer, slow its progression, manage symptoms, and help the patient live as well and as long as possible.
