The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has denied reports circulating on social media that its National Identification Number (NIN) database has been breached.
NIMC said the video circulating online was based on a recycled 2024 report which it had previously dismissed.
The denial was contained in a statement signed by Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications, NIMC, dated September 23, 2026.
The Commission said its National Identity Database (NIDB) remains secure and has not been compromised.
It said it operates multi layered security systems to protect the personal information of registered Nigerians and legal residents.
NIMC urged the public to disregard the video and rely on its official channels for information concerning the National Identity Management System.
The Commission also highlighted its NIN Authentication (NINAuth) platform, which it said provides secure identity verification for web, API and mobile applications.
According to NIMC, the platform requires the consent of NIN holders before their information can be shared for Know Your Customer processes or other verification purposes.
It said NINAuth allows individuals to verify their identities for services including SIM registration, immigration and passport processing, tax filings and financial transactions without unnecessarily exposing their raw NIN or other personal information.
NIMC said the platform complies with the NIMC Act 2026 and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the identity information of Nigerians and legal residents and said it would continue working with relevant agencies to strengthen its systems and tackle misinformation.
It urged members of the public with concerns about their NIN or personal data to contact the Commission through its official channels.
