Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, has called for increased youth and women participation in agriculture through tech-driven solutions, urging startups to lead the charge in reimagining the sector’s future.
Speaking at the maiden edition of the PricePally Impact Summit held in Lagos, Olusanya said the agriculture sector holds untapped potential for economic empowerment particularly for groups often marginalized in Nigeria’s food systems.
The summit, which brought together farmers, policymakers, agritech founders, investors, and logistics professionals, focused on building sustainable, affordable, and inclusive food systems.
“Startups like PricePally have bridged the gap between farmers and consumers, even during disruptions,” she said. They create value for both producers and buyers. These are exactly the kinds of businesses the government is looking to support.”
Olusanya emphasized the transformative power of digital platforms and community-based distribution models, especially during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. She praised PricePally’s efforts in creating value at both ends of the agricultural value chain.
PricePally CEO Luther Lawoyin echoed the need for a mindset shift in how farmers and by extension, agriculture are perceived in Nigeria.
“Farmers should be celebrated and financially secure; they are the backbone of our food system,” Lawoyin said.
Speakers at the summit also highlighted initiatives aimed at expanding access for women in northern Nigeria through agri-call centres and encouraging modern urban-friendly farming techniques like soilless agriculture.
