The Nigerian Army has begun an investigation into the tragic death of Lieutenant Samson Haruna, a Regimental Medical Officer with the 6 Battalion, who reportedly lost his life following a domestic dispute that turned fatal at the Wellington Bassey Barracks, Uyo.
Lieutenant Haruna, who was serving under the 2 Brigade, was said to have sustained severe burns after a fire incident allegedly linked to an altercation with his wife, Mrs. Retyit Obadiah Dalong Haruna, on September 22, 2025.
He was first attended to at the Battalion Medical Facility before being moved to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Tuesday.
Confirming the development in a statement, the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Lawal Muhammad, described the incident as “deeply regrettable” and extended the Army’s condolences to the bereaved family.
While the circumstances surrounding the fire are still under investigation, preliminary findings suggest it stemmed from a domestic disagreement that spiraled out of control.
“The Nigerian Army is saddened by this unfortunate loss and reiterates its stance against domestic violence in all forms,” “The military community must continue to uphold values of respect, dialogue, and peaceful co-existence within families.” The statement reads.
The Army assured that its Military Police have commenced a thorough investigation to uncover the facts surrounding the incident. It also urged personnel and members of the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.
Lieutenant Haruna’s passing has cast a shadow over the Wellington Bassey Barracks, with colleagues and residents expressing shock at the tragic turn of events involving the young medical officer known for his dedication to duty.
