The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed outrage and disappointment over the Federal Government’s decision to exclude the education sector from the N2tn emergency funding package.
The fund, aimed at stabilizing the economy, will instead be allocated to other sectors such as health, agriculture, energy, and general business support.
ASUU National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, criticized the government’s priorities, stating that it is “unwise” to invest trillions in other areas while neglecting the educational system.
He emphasized that the government’s actions demonstrate a lack of interest in the Nigerian education system, which is evident in the poor condition of schools and the brain drain caused by the exodus of Nigerian students to foreign universities.
“Government’s decision will further marginalize the already struggling education sector, perpetuating inequality and limiting access to quality education for the children of the poor”, he said.
He reiterated ASUU’s commitment to fighting for a better-funded and revitalized education system, despite the government’s apparent disinterest.”
