Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi have faulted the lifting of the suspension placed on Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and members of the State House of Assembly, arguing that their suspension was illegal from the outset.
In a post on his X handle, Atiku said there was nothing to celebrate in the development, stressing that the suspension was illegal from the outset.
“Lifting the suspension of Governor Simi Fubara is nothing to cheer about. The suspension of the Rivers State Governor and the State House of Assembly was unconstitutional when it was done six months ago and is still illegal today.
“President Tinubu had no power to suspend a democratically elected governor and state lawmakers. The Rivers shenanigans only signpost the dictatorship of the Tinubu administration,” he wrote.
Similarly, Obi described the suspension as a needless disruption and a constitutional breach that undermined Nigeria’s democracy.
“The restoration of democracy in Rivers State after six months of needless disruption remains a sour side of our democracy today. It was a constitutional breach that will hurt our democracy for a long time.
” I just hope that some lessons were learned by all the gladiators in the Rivers State impasse,” Obi posted on X.
He congratulated the people of Rivers State for their resilience and urged Governor Fubara, the lawmakers, and other political actors in the state to embrace peace and reconciliation.
