The Nigerian Correctional Service has said is working with other security agencies to look for inmates that escaped Borno prison due to the flooding.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Service, Umar Abubakar.
According to Abubakar, 281 inmates escaped Borno prison while seven of them have so far been recaptured and returned to custody.
Abubakar said, flooding on Tuesday ravaged Maiduguri’s correctional facilities, collapsing walls at the Medium Security Custodial Centre and staff quarters, compromising security in the area.
He noted that the Service has custody of the escapees’ details, including their biometric data, and is making this information available to the public.”
“The Service is working in synergy with other security agencies as both covert and overt deployments have been activated to look out for them.
“Presently, a total of seven (7) inmates have been recaptured and returned to custody, while efforts are on ground to track down the rest and bring them back to safe custody.
“While this effort is on, the public is assured that the incident does not impede or affect public safety”, the statement added.
