The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has dismissed claims of introducing N5,000 and N10,000 banknotes, stating that the circulated information is false and not from the apex bank.
The CBN urged the public to rely only on its official website, cbn.gov.ng, for accurate updates.
The bank made this clarification in a statement posted on its official X handle (formerly Twitter).
The false circular claimed that the new N5,000 and N10,000 notes would enter circulation on May 1.
Widely shared on WhatsApp, the viral document was wrongly attributed to the CBN.
The circular stated, “The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has officially announced the introduction of two new denominations – N5,000 and N10,000 banknotes; as part of ongoing efforts to streamline cash transactions and improve liquidity management.”
The document also falsely claimed that Deputy CBN Governor, Dr. Ibrahim Tahir Jr., defended the introduction of the new notes as a measure to cut cash-handling costs and facilitate larger transactions.
However, the CBN dismissed these assertions, advising the public to verify any information through its official website.
“The content is not from the Central Bank of Nigeria. Kindly note that the official website of the CBN is cbn.gov.ng.”
