In a significant move to boost Nigeria’s agricultural sector, the Federal Government, in partnership with China, has selected Iragbiji in Osun State as the site for a new Smart Farming Industrial Estate. This initiative aims to replicate China’s successful agro-industrial reforms within five years, enhancing food production and creating employment opportunities.
The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with the China International Business and Development Corporation (CIBDC), has announced plans to establish a Smart Farming Industrial Estate in Iragbiji, Osun State. The project is designed to transform Nigeria’s agricultural landscape by introducing advanced mechanized farming techniques and digital technologies.
Mr. Chang Daniel, Chairman of CIBDC, emphasized the project’s significance, stating, “With technology and digitalization, we aim to replicate China’s industrial reforms within five years in Nigeria.”
He expressed confidence in Nigeria’s potential, adding, “We believe Nigeria will be a great country in the future.”
Dr. Chidi Ulelu, President of the Nigeria-China Investment Club, highlighted that the project would include the development of a Smart Farming Industrial Estate and the provision of complete electricity generation for the host community. Princess Afoma Adigwe, Executive Director of ‘Uplifting Youth Through Agriculture,’ noted that the estate would adopt a “Live, Learn and Work” model, training youths in agro-business production, processing, packaging, and exportation.
The Aragbiji of Iragbiji, Oba Rasheed Olabomi Odundun IV, welcomed the initiative, stating that it would benefit the new Federal University of Agriculture, students, and the general public. The announcement was celebrated with cultural exhibitions, including oral poetry, drumming, masquerade dances, and local cuisine.
It was disclosed that the collaboration marks a significant step towards modernizing Nigeria’s agricultural sector and fostering economic growth through international partnerships.
