China has opposed former US President Donald Trump’s threat to take military action against Nigeria over alleged killings of Christians, describing it as interference in another country’s internal affairs.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning stated this during a press conference in Beijing, reaffirming China’s support for Nigeria’s sovereignty and development path.
Trump had on October 31 designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” citing threats to Christian communities. The following day, he warned that if the Nigerian government continued to “condone the killing of Christians,” the US would halt all assistance to Nigeria and “very likely take military action” to eliminate Islamic terrorists.
In response, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs dismissed the US claim as “inconsistent with facts,” stressing that the government remains committed to combating violent extremism, protecting all citizens, and promoting religious tolerance and inclusiveness.

“As a comprehensive strategic partner of Nigeria, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people on a development path that fits the country’s national realities,” Mao said.
“We oppose any country’s interference in other countries’ internal affairs under the pretext of religion and human rights. We also oppose the wanton threat of sanctions or use of force.”
