President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reassured Nigerians of his administration’s commitment to religious freedom, national unity and the protection of lives and property, as Christians across the country and around the world celebrate Christmas.
In his Christmas message, the President urged Nigerians to reflect beyond the festivities on the significance of the birth of Jesus Christ and His message of grace, hope, peace and goodwill to humanity.
“Beyond the celebration and festivities of this season, Christmas reminds us to reflect on the significance of Jesus Christ’s birth and His message of salvation as the Prince of Peace,” Tinubu said.
The President congratulated Christians in Nigeria and across the globe, thanking God for the opportunity to serve the country and offering prayers for peace, particularly among people of different religious beliefs.
“As your President, I remain committed to doing everything within my power to enshrine religious freedom in Nigeria and to protect all people of different faiths from violence,” he stated.
Tinubu acknowledged the role of Christians in Nigeria’s development, noting that the teachings of Christ have inspired many to care for the vulnerable and promote peace, tolerance and harmony within their communities.
“The love of Christ and the message of the Gospel have inspired many Christians to care for the vulnerable and less privileged in our society,” he said, commending those who work tirelessly to foster peaceful coexistence.
Reaffirming his administration’s stance on security, Tinubu said that since assuming office in 2023, his government has remained unwavering in its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s unity, stability and security.
“All Nigerians have the right to live, worship and pursue their aspirations in safety and dignity. No one, regardless of ethnicity or belief, should be made to suffer for professing and practising his faith,” the President stressed.
He noted that shared values of love for God and humanity across religions must continue to bind Nigerians together as one people, adding that his government has engaged religious leaders to address concerns bordering on intolerance and insecurity.
“We will build on these conversations to strengthen collaboration between government and religious institutions, prevent conflict and promote peaceful coexistence,” Tinubu said.
The President also urged Nigerians travelling during the festive period to exercise patience and discipline on the roads, wishing them safe journeys and returns.
“With confidence in divine providence and our collective strength, we will continue the work of building a greater Nigeria, one that future generations will be proud of,” he added, wishing Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year in advance.
