Connected Development, (CODE) has condemned the intimidation, use of force and killing of peaceful protesters by some security personnel amidst the ongoing protest against #EndBadGovernance.
CODE said security forces must protect, not harm, those who are exercising their civic rights.
This was disclosed in a statement by organization.
The body also called on the government to takes urgent action to address protesters demands.
The statement reads: “We issue a strong warning to the government: the voices of the people must not be ignored. The grievances expressed during these protests are legitimate and require immediate attention. It is not only the duty of the government to listen but also to act decisively in addressing the root causes of these frustrations.
“We also condemn in the strongest terms the intimidation, Killing and excessive use of force by some security personnel against peaceful protesters. Such actions are unacceptable in a democratic society and undermine the very principles of justice and freedom that our nation stands for.
” The government must ensure that security forces respect the rights of citizens and refrain from any actions that escalate tensions or infringe upon civil liberties. Security forces must protect, not harm, those who are exercising their civic rights.
“At the same time, we denounce the disorder and destruction displayed by some individuals who have taken advantage of the protests to engage in vandalism, looting, and the destruction of public and private properties. Such acts not only undermine the legitimate cause of the protests but also harm innocent citizens and our shared infrastructure.
” Online protesters should also be vigilant against the spread of fake news. Verify information before sharing and act responsibly to prevent escalating societal issues. We call on all Nigerians to remain peaceful and refrain from any form of violence or criminal activity. Our security agencies must be on alert to avert any breach of our territorial integrity and breakdown of law and order.
“We stand with the people of Nigeria in the quest for a better future for all. Let us all strive to make our voices heard in a manner that upholds the values of democracy, respect for human rights and dignity.”
